ABOUT
OUR CRICKET CLUB
The Broadbeach
Cricket Club (The Cats) was formed at a meeting of interested people
in July 1990. After this meeting the newly formed Broadbeach Cricket
Club affiliated with the Gold Coast Cricket Association with teams
in 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade competitions plus
Junior teams in U10, U12 and U14 age groups.
The inaugural
President of Broadbeach Cricket Club was Chris Littlechild and, with
Secretary Karen Harris, was responsible for the early success of the
Club. Dean Burly was appointed Coach of the fledging Club and after
only 1 year in the competition our 2nd grade team won the
Gold coast Cricket Association Premiership for their Division.
At that time,
Broadbeach Cricket Club did not have the facilities they enjoy today
and played their 2nd grade team on a turf wicket at Palm
Beach while the 3rd’s and the Juniors played on canvas
matting over a concrete pitch at Merrimac Oval. In 1992 the Gold
Coast City Council provided Broadbeach Cricket Club with a new turf
wicket at Merrimac Oval and a 1st Grade team was formed
to play in the Gold Coast Cricket competition.
Over the next
few years the Broadbeach Cricket Club was faced with a dwindling
base of potential players from the increase in Holiday Apartments
replacing the residences in the area and the huge increase in the
population in the adjoining suburb of Robina. To ensure that the
Club continued to grow the name of the Club was changed in 1996 to
Broadbeach Robina Cricket Club to reflect the change in population
growth. This allowed the Broadbeach Robina Cricket club to expand
its base and grow to field 7 teams in the Senior Competition and up
to 9 teams in the Junior Competition.
Broadbeach
Robina Cricket Club has been successful in attracting some well
credentialed Coaches over the years including:
Greg Campbell (Four
Tests and 12 ODI's for Australia, 44 First Class Matches); David Todd (ex
Dolphins Gold Coast and Queensland Country); Adrian Smith (ex
Dolphins Gold Coast); Shane Davis (ex Essendon); Mike Laidler (ex
Carlton and Victoria B); Brad Bannister (ex Newcastle and NSW
Country); Sean Fitzsimmons, (ex Gold Coast Dolphins, Qld Country XI,
Aust. Country XI)
The Broadbeach
Robina Cricket Club fields teams in all grades in the Gold Coast
Junior Cricket Association competition and has been successful in
winning 12 Premierships in that competition. (See Juniors page)
