Under 13 Blue End Of Season Wrap

Well, what a season. Before I start the end of season report I would like to thank a few individuals. From the committee I would like to thank Keith Davey & Simon Matthews for their tremendous support throughout the season . We had a few sticky situations in the back half of the season that required their help & they come through with flying colours . I don’t think parents realize how much work goes into a season ( particularly if you wish to do the job properly ) from these guys on the committee together with coaching staff.

I would also like to thank Rick Sales for his help as manager this season. Again , the boys were very lucky to have a person like Rick around as not only did he help out our other under 13 team from time to time but he also attended all training sessions & gave the boys the opportunity to either have a good net or a good field. I think we were the only team in our club who had two people willing to give their time on a Wednesday afternoon so that the boys could improve their skills, as many of them did. Not only did Rick help out on training days but was also there every Saturday to help out with scoring & keeping a general eye on the boys whilst I was umpiring . Apart from all this we would have kept Telstra going with our endless amount of phone calls to try & create the best possible scenarios for our boys week in week out. Thanks Rick.

I would also like to thank our scorers namely Shaun Pearson, Rick as mentioned, & Neil Christie. I just hope I haven’t forgotten anyone, if so my apologies.

The season itself was a great one with only one blemish & that being our 1st elimination semi final. The season for me was great from the point of view that every single one of the boys contributed positively with virtually all players registering best & fairest points throughout the season. There wasn’t really a standout player as you normally see in junior cricket. I think this was the reason why we went through the season undefeated ( one of only two teams in Gold Coast junior cricket ) , the boys played as a team & when one missed out another put his hand up. We didn’t have one player score more than 200 runs & didn’t have one bowler take more than 20 wickets ( again reinforcing my beliefs that the season was a great team effort ). As mentioned earlier , the boys were lucky with the coaching staff available to enhance their skills & by the end of the season we had a very strong fielding side, possibly the best in our competition . This was due to the amount of training spent in that part of the game. We were a victim of our own good skills however , particularly as we were either restricting sides or bowling them out cheap. The boys never really had to chase a decent score & this part of our game proved to be our only weakness , as shown in our semi loss. I think if we keep the same core players that we have over the past 3-4 years & have them batting a little better our boys can go to the next level . Still it was a great effort & for a majority of the boys it was our second semi final appearance in 2 years which shows we are winning more than we are losing .

The award winners this year were ,

Coaches award- Max Perks

Batting award- Jonathan Graves

Bowling award- Max Perks

Most improved- Ryan Petersen

Fielding award- James Christie.

I was very proud of all my players this season & I was very lucky to have a nice bunch of boys .

Best of luck for the future & sincerely hope all the boys come back again next season.

ROUND 7 - 10th November 2006

Broadbeach Blue V Palm Beach 2

The final one dayer prior to Xmas promised to be a good game with the opposition having won more than they had lost. We batted 1st & after 28 overs we had accumulated 6/116. Mitchell Sales finally showed glimpses of the form that we know he can produce & he finished with 38. Max Perks batted well & picked up a neat 28. Our turn to bowl With Chris Pearson, Max & Clinton Lemkau all bowling nice & tight & we again restricted another side , with Palm Beach surprisingly only reaching 2/81. Special thanks for help from Chris Smith from our other under13 side & also Curtis Squires  from our under 14 side who filled in as replacements at short notice. Thanks guys you both played great & fitted in well with the boys. We also bid farewell to 2 of our boys moving on to greener pastures, Andrew Bowers & Jackson Robinson. It was a pleasure coaching you guys & all the boys will miss you both . Always remember Andrew & Jackson that if things don’t work out the way you want them to that the door is always open back at Broady. In saying that I still sincerely hope that things do work out for you,  as I’m sure they will. We only have 4 games to go until the semi finals & at this stage our side is undefeated & sits at the top of the table. Our boys are playing an excellent brand of cricket & I dedicate their success to their commitment & desire to train harder which has improved their skills , their results , & obviously their enjoyment. The only disappointing aspect from my perspective has been the lack of parent , family & loved ones support. Every team we play against  have a minimum of 10 supporters & occasionally we have seen up to 30 supporters cheering on their children.I have actually been approached by opposition parents after a game congratulating me on what a great cricket side we have & at the same time asking me where are our supporters. I understand that not everyone can make it to the games for work reasons or they have other children to support but with only a few games prior to the end of the season it would be good if some family members ( grandparents ) could attend each game. This is very important to the boys as  apart from the fact they enjoy seeing loved ones , it gives the boys great confidence.

February 1st is team photos. Boys , make sure you where your cricket clothes.

ROUND 6 - November26th - 3rd December 2005

Broadbeach Blue V Palm Beach 1

Washed Out

ROUND 5 - November12th - 19th November 2005

Broadbeach Blue V Mudgeeraba

We played this game at home,  the renamed Pizzey Desert. Someone in their infinite wisdom decided to top dress the ground during that week . They did a great job & didn’t miss a blade of grass, however , there was a game of cricket to be played & someone had to bat 1st .After the opposition won  the toss they couldn’t say” we will field “ quick enough.

After another top order collapse ( 4/20 ) however ,  a couple of our boys namely James Christie & Ryan Petersen consolidated the innings  with no risk sensible cricket & got us to a safe level of still having wickets in hand at the 35 over mark, both boys were retired. Jonathan Graves , Jackson Robinson & Max Perks then went about getting stuck in & all boys did a great job ( assisted by some below average catching from the opposition ) having to run just about every run & unselfishly throwing the bat so that the team could register a half decent score & ended up with a team total of 160. A great effort given the conditions we had to bat in ( only 3 fours hit in 50 overs- just about unheard of at Pizzey ).

Our turn to bowl , with conditions more favourable for the batting side. Our boys were right on the money from the start , with all our bowlers performing well. Mudgeeraba didn’t even look like getting the runs mainly because our boys didn’t allow them to. Jonathan Graves bowled with good speed  & took 3 quick wickets to nullify any chance the opposition had of winning. Clinton Lemkau bowled nice lines with his offies & Max Perks put in his usual whole hearted effort & although unrewarded was one of our better bowlers. The boys executed a couple of nice run outs & didn’t drop any catches . Mudgeeraba were bowled out for 60 odd & we went for the outright but were unsuccessful ( not easy to get at the best of times ). A convincing win given we had the worst of conditions both Saturdays.

From a coaches perspective there was a few good things to come out of the game ( apart from winning ). James Christie batted for 32 overs & although he didn’t register a high score , it was in my opinion the best I’ve seen him bat . He showed great patience & maturity & didn’t look like getting out . This dig was what I consider a match winner ( & so did the opposition coach ). Jonathan Graves is slowly getting his lines back to where he should be bowling & with increased concentration levels at training & in the game he has the ability to get a swag every time he gets a bowl. When Jonathan gets it all going he would be easily the most intimidating bowler in the comp & at training last week & in the game he produced what I know he can bowl , lets get some consistency now Johnno.

Well done to all of our boys for another great team effort.

ROUND 4 - October 29th - 5th November 2005

The Blues ventured over to All Saints to play Merrimac Velocity with great confidence after beating the defending premiers ( against all odds ) the week before.

We won the toss & elected to bowl. With the crowd (father Clayton ) chanting MAX PERKS MAX PERKS MAX PERKS , he didn’t let us down as he completely decimated the opposition with a fine opening spell which culminated in us bowling the opposition out for 12. The Blues were instructed to have a dash for 12 overs which they did & we got around 100 in front. Mitchell Sales , Max Perks & James Christie all really turning it on with the bat & being unselfish to put the team in an excellent position to win outright.

Merrimacs 2nd innings mirrored their first , unfortunately for them , with Max again breaking through with fine support from Joel Van Rooyen ( who is bowling better with each game ) . The Blues bowled them out for 15 in the second dig. A thoroughly convincing win – outrighting a side in under 40 overs is just about unheard of. Our boys were offered a Saturday off or to have  a training session & it was encouraging to see all bar Nakul ( who immediately after the win booked himself in for a pool party ) turn up & have a good solid session. Well done boys.

 Just a quick note.

Attitude at training is just as important if not more important than match results . When you come to training you are expected to get stuck in for 90 minutes & work hard on improving your skills ( this is the only time I have with you to prepare for the Saturday ahead ). The most important thing about you boys playing cricket is that you enjoy it . I’ll give you a tip, the game is even more enjoyable when you get runs, wickets & take catches.

ROUND 3 - October 15th - 22nd 2005

Our first 2 day game saw us come out against the powerful Coomera side ( last years premiers). We lost the toss & were sent in . After 7 or 8 overs the coach was asking where the nearest shop was to buy some Panadols. We had crumbled to 5/7 & an outright loss was looking a safe bet. However ye have little faith , the next 4 boys batted beautifully & gave us a respectable total. Ryan Petersen ,James Christie (our new old boy ), Andrew Bowers  & Jackson Robinson all batted with positiveness & patience & we ended up with 126 from about 45 overs. Unbelievable effort from where we were.

Our turn to bowl & after strict penalties put in place after game 2 for excessive noees & wides ( more laps of the oval ) the boys started bowling straight. Every player bowled great. We actually restricted the Coomera boys to 7/113 & registered our 3rd straight win. A great comeback boys. I mentioned to Jackson that we would miss him after Xmas however he said he may be available for the occasional charity match ( Tsunami appeals etc ), last I heard he was checking with his manager, we’ll cross our fingers on that one Jackson. Special mention to Nakul Chaudry for the catch of the season ( so far ). You really had to be there. I’ve played & watched lots of cricket & I’ve never seen anything like it.

ROUND 2 - October 8th 2005

The 2nd of our one dayers provided another entertaining match with the Southport Black boys. Last year we had a few close matches with these boys who actually finished ahead of us in 3rd place. Nakul Chaudry called correctly & we had a bat. Steven Knight & Jonathan Graves opened & got us off to a solid start. Jonathan batted well & ended up getting 40. Jackson Robinson then strode confidently to the wicket & put together a classy 42 no & featured in a great partnership with our new recruit Andrew Bowers who put together a hard hitting 3 6 ( well done Andrew a pleasure to watch ). We ended up at the end of 27 overs ( or thereabouts ) with 4/157. Our turn to bowl & it wasn’t the prettiest bowling display with all the bowlers bowling wides & no balls throughout Southports innings. However we were fortunate to take regular wickets & slow their momentum & at the end of their allotted overs they were 8/142. Max Perks ( todays go too man ) took the honors with 4/22 with his final spell taking the wind out of their sails. The positives from this match apart from some very sensible batting was our catching with Max taking a gem in the deep near the end.

ROUND 1 - October 1st 2005

The boys got off to a flyer against my 2nd favourite team ( Broadbeach white ). After losing the toss we were asked to bowl. Chris Pearson & Max Perks opened the bowling & young Chris decimated the whites early on with a much publicized ( on our website anyway ) double hattrick. He finished with 5 for 1 from 3 overs. Max bowled well starting the team triple hattrick with the last ball of his previous over. The Blues ended up bowling out the whites for 39. We lost a couple of early wickets cheaply however Joel Van Rooyen (25) & Jackson Robinson ( 13 no) righted the ship & we had a convincing win ending up with 5/125.

A good start to the season & again congratulations Chris on the double hatty. I’m sure you & the boys won’t forget that one.
