2006/07 -- 1st GRADE REVIEW
The
year started well with a solid win against Southport/Labrador away, with
Sean Fitzsimmons top scoring with 67 and Ben Kennan with 22. We ended up
with 163 off 40 overs. We then bowled them out for 100 in 29 overs with
Cheyne Brooke the best of the bowlers with 4 for 17 off 5overs.Things
looked on track again in the 2nd game dismissing Mudgeeraba/Nerang for
130. But our batters faltered and we were bowled out for 88. Best
bowlers were Chris Miller 4 for 42 off 17 and Sean Fitzsimmons with 3
for 26 off 8. Our next game we batted better and got to 190 off 67 overs
against Loganholme. Unfortunately the next week was abandoned because of
rain. Run getters were Adam Castle 50, Steven Baker 41 and Sean
Fitzsimmons 34.
We played Coomera Hope Island in our 4th game in which we batted and
made 203 off 71 overs. Run scorers were Micheal Walker 42, Jay Skinner
39 and Sean Fitzsimmons 31. We then bowled them out for 166 in a
polished bowling display. Andrew Stinson and Kurt Wallace the pick of
the bowlers with 3 wickets a piece. The next game we held out for a hard
fort draw against Queens who made 266 and in reply we were 9 for 200.
Ben Kennan with 95 and Tony Andrews with 53 were the pick of the
batters. A disappointing loss to Logan Village followed being bowled out
for 107 chasing 255. Another loss to Runaway Bay saw us dropping down
the ladder pretty quickly. Chasing 139 our batsmen could only muster
118.
A win in our next game was a necessity and the boys pulled through with
great win against at the time first placed Helensvale. We made 209 with
high scores going to Michael Walker 43 and Sean Fitzsimmons 42. We then
bowled them out for 158 thanks largely to Shane Davis with figures of 4
for 11 off 6 overs. Round 9 saw a loss to Palm Beach Currumbin which
slowed our race for a top 4 spot. We knew we had to win our last 2 games
to have any hope for the finals and we started well against Alberton
with a very gritty first innings win. Best bowler was Andrew Stinson
with 5 for 44 off 20 overs and best batter was Tony Andrews with a
mature innings of 60. Last game of the season we needed to win outright
and have other results go our way to make the four. We declared our 1st
innings at 2 for 187 off 35 overs with Sean Fitzsimmons and Tony Andrews
top scoring. Our bowlers then ripped through Surfers Paradise for 78 and
141 leaving 35 runs to win outright which we did with ease. Best bowlers
Jason Cox and Cheyne Brooke with 6 for and 4 for respectively. To
everyone's surprise we slipped into the final four.
We then faced first placed Mudgeeraba/Nerang in the semi final. Mudgy
won the toss and batted and proceeded to bat for 2 days effectively
shutting us out of the game without getting a bat. A disappointing way
to go out but the boys showed big hearts in fielding for 2 days in the
heat and not giving up. Well done to Mudgy who went on to win the
final!!
Looking forward to going a few steps further this year.
