Broadbeach Robina Second Grade Season 07/08

Season 2007-08 promised a lot after our disappointing end to the last season, being beaten in the Grand Final. Numerous changes from the prior season saw a new look team take the field for the new season. Gone were captain Plugger, Keeper Lawny, Allrounder Reagan, Batsmen Mitch Shepherd, Josh Freestone & Rob Stinson. New faces included Andy Manion, Grant Edwards making a long awaited comeback and a host of promising young players.

First Game at Coomera Hope Island
We won the toss, batted and declared 6/241 off 54 overs (S Robson 64, A Manion 46, M Weatherall 41, J Skinner 34) Coomera Hope Island then batted very well against a rusty bowling attack to post 299. (V Serci 3/33, C Miller 3/73) Disappointing end to a game where we batted very well and backed our bowlers to defend the total.

Second Game at Home v Burleigh Tamborine
We won the toss and sent them in trying to get an outright result. After them being 1/112, they were all out for 163, thanks to a marvelous bowling spell from Kurt Wallace, well supported by Chris Miller. ( K Wallace 5/19, C Miller 4/32). We then went about chasing quick runs. Andy Manion in his second game for two years batted superbly for 100 not out, he was joined by Jay Skinner who bludgeoned a quick fire 76. We declared at tea on the second day 3/242 off 54 overs. They then made 92. ( C Miller 4/38, A McKenzie 3/22, K Wallace 2/20) This left us chasing 14 runs from one over, we only managed 7. Very close to gaining the outright in a much improved performance.

3rd Game at Logan Village
This game saw the much anticipated return of Grant Edwards. "Stix" did not disappoint his fans and captured 5/38 from 11 overs. He was ably supported by Scott Robson who took 2 for 1 off 5 overs. Logan Village were bundled out for 130 after choosing to bat. We then raced to 3/247 off the remaining 41 overs of the day. The top three batsmen all got 20s, but the story of the afternoon was Jay Skinner 77 no & Joel Kennan 71 no. Both in sight of much deserved centuries at the end of day one. Day two saw showers all the way up to the ground and showers up until just before play. We promptly declared much to the disappointment of the two batsmen, but they saw the need to declare. Luckily we did as Logan Village batted 62 overs to get 159. C Miller 4/36, S Robson 2/3 & K Wallace 2/37 did the damage. We ended up fielding with nine players for most of the innings, so a very good effort. This left us 45 to get, Joel Kennan smashed 30no to ensure the win and his century for the game.

4th Game at Galleon Way v PBC Maroon
We won the toss and piled on 8/306 in 62 overs. Best batters S Robson 75, G Edwards 69no, D Meiring 50, K Wallace 43. We then bowled them out for 174. G Edwards 4/35, J Kennan 3/8 & S Robson 2/35. They were asked to follow on and we had them 5/101 when bad light stopped play. The wickets were shared.

5th Game at Home v Helensvale
We won the toss and sent them in. They ended up making 131. Best bowlers A Robson 4/11, J Kennan 2/29, J Skinner 2/31. We then went in chasing quick runs and were all out for 262, J Skinner 55, A Manion 45, K Wallace 41, A Rodrick 39, M Weatherall 31 ret. Second innings they made 98, with no answer to the unconventional spin of Kurt Wallace 5/25.

6th Game at Salk Oval v PBC Gold
We turned up with a team depleted by first grade call ups and unavailability's. We won the toss and batted making 174, best batsman by far was Scott Robson 60, well supported by Zac Latter with 33. The total was going to be very hard to defend against a strong side, we fought hard, having them 7 down when they passed our score.

7th Game at Alberton
The first day was a washout, so reverted to a one dayer on the second day. They made 195, with the best bowlers J Cox 3/28, A Robson 2/22, G Edwards 2/46 & J Kennan 2/50. We then batted and were all out for 162, J Cox 41, L Common 28, J Kennan 26, C Werb 24 doing the bulk of the scoring. Disappointing showing against the reigning premiers.

8th Game at Home v Surfers Paradise
We won the toss and sent hem in on a belter. Very good effort by the bowlers, Kurt Wallace was the pick of them with 6/14, everyone else chipped in. We then went about making a score that would only need us to bat once. Kurt Wallace batted well for his 53, but two great innings overshadowed him. Andy Manion 122 no & Joel Kennan with his first century in Senior cricket batted us to 2/285 off 50 overs. They then went on to make 109, with Hayden Kitchener 4/31, J Cox 3/13 doing the damage with the ball.

9th Game at Allied Drive v Southport Labrador
This was the game of the season. We won the toss and elected to bat. Once again best batsman was Scott Robson 40, we made 139. We knew we had the bowlers to defend it, they were very confident that it was 100 short. The 28 run 9th wicket stand between G Edwards & A Robson proved in the end to be very valuable. Overnight they were 0 for 22, looking confident. The second day proved to be a good one for us. They were looking good at 4/117 and at tea made it to 5/121. After tea, there were two magnificent run outs and some unbelievable bowling from Joel Kennan to bring us victory. They were bowled out for 126. J Kennan 5/29 & A Robson 2/17 the multiple wicket takers. We then went in for 26 overs and cruised to 2/99, C Werb 46 no, C Andrews 37. A good win against one of the better sides in the comp.

10th Game at Home v Mudgeeraba Nerang
This was the game we had waited all season for. They were undefeated and it was going to be a good guide of how we were travelling. They won the tossed and we bowled extremely well to dismiss them for 208. Best bowlers were A Robson 3/24, J Cox 3/48 & G Edwards who bowled 30 overs unchanged for 2 for 77. We were 3.21 overnight thanks to two ridiculous LBW decisions. Day 2 saw us steadily lose wickets throughout the day until Scott Robson 87 & Hayden Kitchener 23 joined for a 60 run partnership to get us to 8/174. Scott was out caught on the fence for a magnificent 87, leaving J Cox & A Robson to get the last 20 runs to win. They managed 14. A great effort with the batsmen we had against the eventual undefeated premiers.

11th Game at Home v Loganholme
We won the toss and after being 3/154 were all out for 199, K Wallace 63 no, J Hill 39, L Common 25, C Andrews 22 were the only ones to show fight with the bat. They went in and cruised past he total with 6 wickets down. S Robson 2/43 & K Wallace 2/47 the wicket takers.

Semi Final at Neilsens Road v Mudgeeraba Nerang
We won the toss and sent them in, backing our bowlers to get them out for a reasonable score. What we did not count on was one of the greatest innings in second grade to be seen. Ryan Beere batted superbly to get 201 and totally bat us out of the game. All credit goes to our bowlers who toiled manfully with very few bad balls given to the batsmen. G Edwards 32 overs 2/88, C Miller 37 overs 2/100 & A Robson 2/22 were the multiple wicket takers, but credit goes to all the bowlers.

A disappointing way to end the season.

I wish to thank everyone that turned out for the twos in 07/08. In the end we ran out of personnel with people leaving the club and first grade call-ups making us just scrape into 4th place. I believe it may have been a different story if we had relatively the same team for the whole season, but that's life. Hopefully next year we can build a solid team for the season and make a serious challenge for the title.

Cheers Robbo
