Broadbeach-Robina 2008/09 2nd Grade Season Report
Round 1 Vs Helensvale at Hessian Oval.
We bowled first and got off to a bad start with Helensvale being 3/171 at lunch. We were very rusty being first game of the season and realized this. After lunch we go it together and ended up bowling them out for 188. Mark Souter was the pick of the bowlers with 4/43 and Jason Cox and Jay Skinner chimed in with 2 wickets each.
We went in to bat and finished the day well on top at 1/110 with Kurt Wallace not out on 35 and Scott Robson not out on 49. Unfortunately week 2 was rained out and the match ended in a draw.
Round 2 Vs Alberton at Merrimac Oval.
We bowled first again and put in another good performance with the ball, bowling Alberton out for 126. The pick again was Mark Souter with 4/22 and Kurt Wallace 3/33. We got off to a great start with the bat to be 3/66 at the end of day 1. The next week was rain affected again and we didn’t get on until 5pm. The target was reduced to 82 and we got it in 3 overs to notch our first win for the year. Kurt Wallace was the main stay again with 32 not out.
Round 3 Vs Surfers Paradise at Somerset College.
We won the toss and put them in on a fairly good track. We took steady wickets to bowl them out for a very gettable 190. Scott Robson was the pick of the bowlers with 3/34 with the rest of the wickets shared around. We made a terrible start and at one stage were 3/15. We made a steady come back to 7/178 but still looking shaky. We ended up being bowled out for 285. Kurt Wallace made 51, Glen Casperson 70 and Robbie Stinson 41. The win was secured though with Ross Casperson making 45 and big Jason Cox Smashing 70 off about 30 balls. A great team win.
Round 4 Vs Southport-Labrador at Merrimac Oval.
They won the toss and batted first and being the top team we knew we had to bowl well. We did and bowled them out for 126 on a good batting wicket. Jay skinner took 5/35 and Andrew Robson 3/26 to get us off to a good start. Our batting was very disappointing with only Mick Walker showing any resistance to make 30 as we were bowled out for 89. They batted again and ended up 9/219 in there 2nd innings with Kurt Wallace taking 5/65. A disappointing game for us.
Round 5 Vs Palm Beach Currumbin Gold at Merrimac Oval.
This was the 1st of the one-day games for the year. We were sent in by Palm Beach and again were disappointing with the bat to be bowled out for 90.
Not letting this get us down we put in a fantastic effort with the ball but just fell short with Palm Beach making 7/91 to take the win. Jake Spackmann bowled a fantastic spell to take 3/27 and Benny Kennan 2/5 off 1 over with the best caught and bowled you will ever see. A bad result but we never gave up.
Round 6 Vs Mudgeeraba-Nerang at Neilsens Road.
Another one-day game and another rain affected game. The Mudgee boys did a fantastic job getting the pitch up and we played a 35 over a side game with one of the boundary’s only 25m from the pitch because of a soaked out-field. We batted first and did ok making 5/155 off our 35 overs. Glen Casperson made 25, Ross Casperson 38 and Scott Robson 33 not out with some great hitting at the end.
The short boundary didn’t help us as they had some good hitters and they got the runs off the last ball of the game to make 5/156 with Scott Robson the best bowler with 3/13.
Round 7 Vs Runaway Bay at Oxenford.
The 3rd one-day game and our best game for the year. They batted first and got off to a fast start but we stuck at it and bowled them out for 170, which was a pretty good score for a 40 over game. All bowlers bowled well with Jay Skinner 2/34, Scott Robson 2/31 and Hayden Kitchener 2/32 the main destroyers.
We got off to a flyer with Andrew Rodrick making 24 off 10 balls. We ended up chasing it down with 3 overs to spare to finish on 2/173. Ross Casperson made a great 51 not out and Jono Lane, with possibly the best innings i have ever seen, 80 not out.
Round 8 Vs Loganholme at Tansey Park.
Another one-day game and a total contrast to our last game.
Logan batted first and made a big score of 6/193 off there 40 overs. We fielded terribly and dropped 7 catches that did not help our cause.
We went in to bat and things did not get any better. We were bowled out for 95. Ross Casperson was the only player that stood up making a good 34.
Round 9 Vs Queens at Angove Park.
The last one-day game for the year and again our fielding let us down.
Queens batted first and again we were chasing a big total after they made 6/204 off there 40 overs. We again fielded poorly and dropped crucial catches. 2 good performances with the ball were Joel Kennan 3/33 and Jay Skinner 2/16.
Our batting wasn’t bad but we got a lot of starts with no one going on to get the big score we needed. Andrew Rodrick made 29, Jono Lane 27, Scott Robson 25 and 4 others made scores in the teens. Another disappointing loss.
Round 10 Vs Coomera-Hope Island at Merrimac Oval.
We were back into the 2-day games and hoping for a change of fortune.
Coomera batted first and we bowled well again to knock them over for 145. Mark Souter was back and was chief destroyer with 6/37.
We then went in to bat and our inconsistent form continued being bowled out for 95 with only Scott Robson showing some resistance making 33.
Coomera went back in chasing quick runs and made a sporting declaration at 6/102 leaving us 152 to win. Pommie Matt Robbins took 2/26
We decided we would chase it at all costs as our season was on the line but we fell well short being bowled out for 84 and losing outright.
Round 11 Vs Palm Beach Currumbin Maroon at Galleon Way.
We won the toss and batted on a good pitch but a very long and slow out field.
We batted the whole day, which was our aim and finished the day all out for 128 which given how slow the out field was, actually was a pretty good score and would have been 200+ on any other ground. Andy Manion was the main stay making a patient 32 and Scott Robson 32.
Day 2 was unfortunately rained out the match was a draw.
Round 12 Vs Logan Village at Merrimac Oval.
I asked the boys for a big effort this game as I believed we were a much better team that results had shown.
We won the toss and put Logan Village in to bat and I wasn’t let down. Every one contributed and we bowled them out for 117. Matt Robbins starred with 5/26 and Matty Shaw, in his 2nd grade debut, took 2/28 and was unlucky not to have more.
We carried our improvement into our batting too, passing there score only 1 wicket down and going on to end up 7/182 when play was called off. Andy Manion made a great 68, Matt Robbins 37 and Ross Casperson retired hurt on 22.
Round 13 Vs Burleigh-Mt Tamborine at Merrimac Oval.
The last game of the year and although we wanted to have some fun, we wanted to end with a win.
Burleigh batted first and we bowled them out for a gettable 192. Every one bowled well but 2 bowlers got all the rewards with Jay Skinner taking 5/41 and Andy Manion 4/19 with a great spell of tight on the spot bowling.
We tried hard with the bat but just fell short being bowled out for 172. Andy Manion again stood tall with 28, Luke Presley 23, Ross Casperson 28 but the most impressive performance was from young Shay Killey opening the batting and making a stylish 33.
Over all it was a disappointing season from a talented side. I really believed we were a top 4 side but we were just too inconsistent. We couldn’t get both batting and bowling right in the same game.
I myself and I am sure my whole team can not wait for the 2009/10 season to start so we can make a huge improvement on last season and show every one just how good a team Broadbeach-Robina can be.
Ross Casperson took out our batting award for most runs and best average while Jay Skinner took the most wickets with Mark Souter winning the best bowling average.
I look forward to writing next years report as I know it will be a much more positive result and hopefully with a premiership to go with it.
I really believe with the systems that have been already put in place and the eagerness of our players Broadbeach-Robina Cricket Club will have a very successful 2009/10 season through all grades.
