Third Grade Season 08/09 Review

Game 1 vs Surfers @Home
After winning toss we batted & had a shakey start losing 3/19 before Hayden Kitchener with help from Sunny Modi(28) &Darren George(18) was out for 129 with the score on 211! We were able to put on some quick runs & declared @ 7/275 off 48overs. We then bowled 25 overs to have them 6/47 with Andrew Stinson (4/23 off 11) & Vince Serci (1/17 off 10 inc 5 maidens) setting up what look like an outright win but rain halted play half an hour before stumps on day 1 & then rain prevented any play day 2, costing us at least 3 if not 7 points( which came back to haunt us later in season)

Game2 vs Helensvale@Rugby Pk
Again I won toss but chose to bowl & again Vince(3/33off17) &Andrew(3/50 off 15) got us to a positive start & they finished 136 off 50! By stumps day 1 we had a 1st innings lead which was pleasing with weather taken out of story. We ended with 226 with everyone getting a start without going on with it (Chris Andrews 20, Rob Casey 38, Andrew Rodrick 32, & Rod Millot 38n.o.). Match then ended with them 4/164( Andrew 2/47)

Game3 vsBurleigh@ Jacobs Well
We were sent in & lost our 1st wicket @ 54 with Andrew Rodrick out for44! Sunny batted well & was run out going for his 50th run! But the highlight of our innings was Simon Taylor’s chanceless 51 coming in @10, saw us reach 236! They batted well after losing 1/0 until Hayden & Jake Spackman bowled together taking 7/53 & 2/14 respectively routing them for 112 off 57. Enforcing the follow-on proved fruitless with them 2/182 with Jake(1/8 off 6 a stand out)

Game4 vs Runaway Bay@Nerang High
We bowled 1st & after having them 3/15 they got away from us ending with 247 off52. A Stinson, Simon& Hayden all ending with 3for. Our turn @ the crease was forgettable but for Sunny(28) & Craig Werb(46) ending with 159. So with nothing to lose & being 2 players short we went out to give it our best shot . Harry Singh(3/31) started the ball rolling and Hayden(7/26) mopped up routing them for 80 off 21 leaving us 17 overs to get 169 runs. After a shakey start we were able to get to 164 off 16.5overs we needed a 6 off the last ball which Ben Galbraith proceded to hit the ball over the fine leg boundary where a fielder caught the ball took 2 steps back into play & claimed catch robbing us of an outright win which we deserved!! Game5 vsTamborine@Pizzey Pk
Losing the toss we batted & only reached 123 off 51 thanks to our 9,10,11 (Ben 20, A stinson 24, Josh Robson 22) almost tripling our score! They then lost their 1st wicket @118 before declaring @ 6/156(Hayden3/49, Ben Johnson 2/8). Week 2 was rain effected & saw less than 38 overs bowled we did score 236 though for no return.

Game6 vsQueens@Dux 1 day
We won the toss & they opened with a century stand but ended with 5/196 off their 40overs, both openers bowled well (Craig 1/20, Andrew0/17 from their 8), we thought we were well in the match. But after being 0/33 we collapsed to be 8/87! But with a storm looming & whirlwind Josh Robson(28n.o.) we were all out for 129.

Game7 vs Southport Labrador@Cooke Murphy 1 day
Winning toss we scrambled to 196 2balls short of our 40 overs(Rod 42, Sunny 34,me 35,& Ben 18n.o.). We bowled well & backed it up with great fielding & were able to rout them for 120 off 28.4 overs (Harry 3/14, Simon /22, Ben 5catches behind @keeper)

Game8 vsMudgee Blue@Neilsons Rd 1day
After winning toss we setting a good total & thanks to Rod(86n.o.), Mark Slacksmith(21) we scored 174. Again with a great all round effort( A Stinson 4/12, Josh 4/17 &Simon 0/12 off8) they were out for 65 off 25.

Game9 vsPalm Beach@Mallawa
Won the toss & sent them in having them 6/39 they then fought back to finish 9/213 off their 40overs(Craig 2/16, Andrew 3/32). We batted well till losing 3wickets on 40 &stumbling our way to 8/87 Craig(54)needing a run a ball Sean Roe(43n.o.) assisted 1stly by Andrew(16),then Simon(18n.o.) we went past them with 3overs to spare . This was without a doubt the best one day match I can remember playing in!

Game10 vsCoomera Hope Island@Pizzey
We were sent in & with confidence high & the need for a result I declared early with 8/163 off 51(Rod 32, Rob Stinson 23, Sean 31 & Rob Casey 25n.o.). Thanks to the best team bowling effort for the year (Craig 3/39 off 19,Andrew 1/20 off 15, Simon 0/28 off 14, Hayden 5/21 off 5.3) they only managed 118. Chasing an outright result we dec @5/77 but couldn’t get the wickets needed.

Game11 vsMudgee Red @Neilson
In a game we needed to win we were sent in & we struggled to a total of 177 from52(Sunny 28, Craig 47, Andrew 16n.o.). We then bowled steadily to have them 2/41 2 stumps & hopes were high, until rain prevented any play the following week.

Game12 vsLoganholme Green @Tudor
After rain washed out day 1 they chose to bat 1st & managed 176(Craig 3/22, Andrew 2/33, the pick of the bowling. In reply we reached 6/180 with 2overs to spare(Chris 32, Sunny 29, Rod 29, Craig 18, Josh 25n.o.).

Game13 vsLoganholme red @ Pizzey
Needing an outright & 3 results to go our way to make semis, we went out to finish on a high, so sent them in & after 32.2overs they were all out for84(Andrew 2/27, Scott Robson 2/21, Hayden 2/12, but pick of bowlers Simon 2/9 off 7 was unplayable, & for 2nd year in a row left his best bowling to the end of the season). We then dec. @ 5/154 off 24 overs. We then bowled well again to have them all out for 139 off35overs(Andrew 4/54 & Scott 4/18 off8 the stand outs), leaving us with 70 to get for the outright win & we did 5 down(Sunny 28n.o.).

I would like to thank Andrew Rodrick for his support as vice captain for the year & all players who gave me their full support through the season. Special mention to a couple of guys who over the years have given me their all on the field time and again, and are moving on, Craig Werb & Chris Andrews thanks for everything & stay in touch.

Anyway in summary with just a little more luck with the weather & some fair play we would have been very hard to beat in the finals as our run home since Christmas proved we were 2nd to none. Bring on 09/10 season. I wish Coxy all the very best as skipper ! IT’S OUR YEAR!
